Vincent Shorter, 76, of Speedway, WV, passed away on July 19, 2026. Born on December 23, 1949, in Mercer County, West Virginia, Vince was the son of the late Roy and Elizabeth Shorter, and one of twelve children.
Vince grew up working on his family's farm, an upbringing that stayed with him throughout his life and shaped his deep love of the land. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Elizabeth Shorter, and by his siblings Billy Shorter, Joyce Highfield, and Mary Jane Durking.
Vince loved spending time in his garden, where he grew and canned green beans and tomatoes, always taking joy in sharing them with friends and neighbors throughout the community. He also loved hunting, fishing, and searching the hills for ginseng.
Vince is survived by his two children: son Billy Shorter and wife Jennifer Shorter of Lerona, WV, and daughter Elizabeth Crouse and husband Brian Crouse of Edenton, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zachary Shorter and wife Savannah, Kadyn Shorter, Hannah Crouse, and Brandon Hall, as well as his great-grandchildren, Logan and Austin Shorter. He is also survived by brothers, Johnny Shorter, Randy Shorter and wife Tammy, Bobby Shorter, and Patrick Shorter, as well as sisters, Frances Worley and husband Tommy, Vickie Keatley and husband Randy, and Rebecca Shorter Knight and partner Curtis McManaway. Vince is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Vince will be remembered for his hard work, his generosity, and the love he shared with his family and community. Memorial service to celebrate the life Vince Shorter will be held at Painter's Chapel in Speedway, WV, on August 7, 2026, at 5:00 PM, with a dinner to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
