Obituary

Shirley Jean Hillyer, 86, of Fairground Hollow Road, Clintwood, VA, passed away peacefully at Whitesburg, KY ARH Hospital surrounded by her family.  Born in Welch, WV on May 29, 1937, to John and Anna Mosko, she grew up in Kimball, WV and was a 1955 graduate of Welch High School. She was of the Catholic faith and grew up going to church in Kimball and Powhatan.  Shirley completed the X-ray Technician program at Charleston General Hospital and worked as an X-ray Technician at Grace Hospital and Welch Emergency for 21 years.  Shirley decided to go into the education field and worked as a teacher's aid and secretary for 25 years for McDowell County Schools.  She was fortunate to be a private aid to a dear student, Jimmy Crouse, who became family, during that time.  She was an active member of the McDowell County School Service Personnel Association where she served as President for many years.  Shirley was an active volunteer with Elkorn Valley Little League serving as President and other officer positions while her boys were active in Little League Baseball.  Shirley's favorite pastime, other than family time, was working puzzles on her I-pad and reading.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth Hillyer. Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses; John Kenneth and Gerlinde Hillyer of Hamburg, Germany, Jimmy and Cathy Hillyer of Princeton, WV and Jeff and Lisa Hillyer, whom she made her home with in Clintwood, VA.  Seven grandsons, Tyler and Hannah Hillyer of Roanoke, VA, Matthew Hillyer of Princeton/Morgantown, WV, Chandler Hillyer, Evan Hillyer, Braden Hillyer, Ayden Hillyer of Clintwood, VA, Dawson Hillyer of Washington, DC.  One great-grandson whom she loved spending time with, Lincoln Hillyer of Clintwood, VA.  She is survived by her siblings, Edward Mosko of Winfield, WV, Jim and Candy Mosko of Pensacola, FL and Mitzi Romeo of Bluefield, WV. A family memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 11th at Memorial Funeral Directory with Father Sebastian Devasya as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, WV. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, WV Chapter, P.O. Box 18485, South Charleston, WV 25303.  Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com .  The Hillyer family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
