Ruth Ann
Cook Urps
Feb 12, 1945 — Jan 3, 2024
Ruth Ann Cook Urps was born on February 12, 1945 to James and Maude Cook in Davy, West Virginia. When Jim and Maude Cook had a new baby (there were seven of them) Jim would always give them a nickname. When Ruth Ann was born, her father gave her the name of "Pat Annie." Ruth Ann then became known to all her younger siblings as "Pat." Then she became "Pat" to all their spouses. As they had children, she became "Aunt Pat" to her nieces and nephews and the "Aunt Pat" to her great-nieces and great-nephews. Heaven forbid if they ever called her Ruth Ann! It was absolutely not allowed. Those of us who loved her dearly and knew her as "Pat" have now come to say goodbye. She passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wayne Urps, and her parents, as well as her brothers Earl and Donald Cook, and her beloved sister, Edith Large. Ruth Ann graduated from Welch High School in 1963. She then lived and worked in Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C. where she began her career in banking. On August 20, 1965, she and Carl Wayne were married in Washington, D.C., where Carl served in the United States Air Force. After Carl completed his service, they moved back to West Virginia where they continued their lives and started their family. Ruth Ann continued her career at the McDowell County National Bank, where she worked for many years. After she "retired" she took a job managing the gift shop at the Welch Community Hospital. Ruth Ann was a great lover of people, a quick wit, and in her later years, a world traveler. She was endlessly curious and full of boundless energy. Ruth Ann was also an active member of the Davy First Church of God and later, the First Church of God in Princeton, West Virginia. Ruth Ann is survived by her daughters, Tonya Colbert and husband Gary, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Traci Renn and husband, Will, of Princeton; and her son Matthew Urps and wife Heather, of Huntersville, North Carolina. She is also survived by two grandsons, Jakob Fedele, a Junior at West Virginia University, and Liam Renn, a seventh-grade student at Princeton Middle School. Other survivors include three sisters, Nina Bell of Marion, Ohio; Doris Burks and husband, Larry, of Norman, Oklahoma; Kathy Patrick and husband, Bill, of Johnson City, Tennessee, brother-in-law, John Large, of Kettering, Ohio; sister-in-law Janice Cook of Nevada, Ohio; sister-in-law, Beverly Scellato of Bargersville, Indiana. "Aunt Pat" also left numerous nephews and nieces and their children. Ruth Ann loved the new generation of family babies and was always up for baby visits. Ruth Ann is also survived by many close friends, including the "Bailey Sisters", Lana, Loran, Rita, and Karen, their husbands, and families who drew close around her in her last days. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Ruth Ann Cook, will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, January 12, 2024, Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family from Noon until the service hour at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Those unable to attend can view her services on our website via www.memorialfd.com. The family would like to express deep appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Sheenu Sheela at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center, all those at WVU Medicine who provided care during the many hospitalizations in the last year of her life; Compassus of Princeton for their kind and thoughtful care which allowed Ruth Ann to die at home on her own terms; and Ellen, Roxanne, Amber, Nikki and Karen who cared for her in her last days. With deepest gratitude and appreciation, the family also requests no flowers or gifts but would be so pleased to have donations made in Ruth Ann's name to your local food bank, the Princeton First Church of God, 304 Mahood Avenue, Princeton, WV 24740, or any other needy charity. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com . The Urps family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
