Phyllis Lorene
King
Jul 5, 1932 — Jul 26, 2023
Phyllis Lorene King, 91, of Princeton, died peacefully at home with family on July 26, 2023. Born in Bolt WV, she was the daughter of the late Wilmer Weldon and Ethel Beckett. Phyllis was a graduate from Trap Hill High School. After completing school, she worked at G. C. Murphy in Beckley for a short time before moving to Princeton, where she made her home. She was then employed by Maidenform for a number of years before she married and raised her family. Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, Phyllis was always appreciative of the simpler things in life and never took conveniences for granted. Having been born and raised in the country, Phyllis enjoyed nature. She was especially fond of flowers, butterflies, and birds. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, playing bingo, watching TV game shows, murder mysteries, and Days of Our Lives. She enjoyed traveling but was happiest upon returning to her home. She made the world's greatest meatloaf, and her unique way of frying oysters has never been duplicated. She was incredibly sentimental, keeping every Birthday, Mother's Day, and Christmas card she ever received. Phyllis was a wife, mother, and caretaker whose endless and unselfish love for her family would endure come what may. She raised two children while also taking care of her invalid mother. The extra challenges of caring for an elderly person in addition to raising two young children must have been overwhelming at times, but Phyllis was able to make sure that everyone's needs were met. Her husband began to suffer from poor health only a few years after her children left home. For years, Phyllis went to countless doctors' appointments and spent several hospital stays beside her husband as he was treated for his illnesses. As the years passed, Phyllis' own health began to fade, and she had to face a number of challenges for herself. She will always be remembered for her caring, selflessness, inner strength, and unconditional love. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Basil Eugene King, her sister, Evelyn Furey, and special canine friend, Buddy. Survivors include her son, Jeffrey King of Princeton, her daughter, Deborah Mullins and husband Lloyd of Oxford, NC, her grandchildren, Lisa and Michael Mullins of NC, and her sister, Betty King of Salem, VA. Graveside services will be held at Noon, on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with Pastor Mike Furey officiating. Friends may visit with the family Friday from 11:00 until 11:45 A.M. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com . The King family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
