Phillip Grady McKenzie, 78, of Princeton, died early Friday morning, October 27, 2023, at the Veterans Hospital in Beckley. Born June 23, 1945, at Lynco, he was the son of the late Lake McKenzie Sr. and Elizabeth Gillespie McKenzie. Gr ady was a graduate of Athens High School and had served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He had served as a police officer for the City of Athens, a former coal miner and a professional truck driver. While his health permitted, he loved to hunt, play music both country and blue grass as well as messing around with cars. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters: Harmon, James, Jack, Frank, Ernie, Lake, Harold, Raymond and Glenn and Frances Jonesque, Helen McKenzie and Margaret Saunders. Those left to cherish his memory, his wife of 57 years, Martha Lu Rose McKenzie; Four children, Christine McKenzie, Dawn Shook (Chris), Sean McKenzie (René), Bridgett Haislip (Chuck); Four grandchildren, Mac Haislip, Jake Shook, Piper and Jameson McKenzie; Brother, Randall Blevins along with a host of special nieces and nephews and adopted daughter, Amanda Shorter. His lifelong friends, Jimmy and Delores Easter and children and Dwight and Martha Easter and children. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Robby Shorter officiating. Burial with military graveside rites provided by the WV Honor Guard will follow in the Elgood Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com .
