Pastor Jerry Carroll Martin, 88, of Wayside, W.Va., formerly of Princeton, W.Va., died Monday, May 13, 2024, at Carilion Roanoke (Va.) Memorial Hospital. Born April 28, 1936, in Princeton, he was the son of the late Garnet Martin (d. 1998) and Lena Martin (d. 2008). Jerry grew up on Unity Road in Athens, W.Va., and was a 1954 graduate of Athens High School. He was a member of Coach Joe Vachon's 1953 basketball team that won the Class B state championship. He attended Concord College and, later, Appalachian Bible Institute at Beckley, W.Va. Jerry worked for A&P grocery, Norfolk and Western Railway, Appalachian Power and Nationwide Insurance before entering the ministry in the early 1970s. He was an assistant pastor at Johnston Chapel Baptist Church in Princeton and First Baptist Church of Germantown, Ohio, and former pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Danville, W.Va., and Pine Grove Baptist Church at Lindside, W.Va. Jerry also had a vision for the mission field and was currently serving on the board for Cherith Bible Institute. He loved gospel music. A talented bass singer, Jerry was a founding member of the Johnston Chapel quartet, which recorded several albums. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife: Ruth Reasor Martin (d. 2011); and a son: Gary Keith Martin (d. 1971), two brothers-in-law, Jim Belcher and Howard Dillon. Survivors include his wife: Rita Martin of Wayside; a son: Larry Martin and wife Nancy of Princeton; a daughter: Lori McNeill of Wilkesboro, N.C.; and two sisters: June Geiger of Glen Dale, W.Va., and Judith Fardoulis of Wilmington, Del. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Kelly Keathley of Princeton, Jonathan Martin of Princeton, and Jett McNeill of Wilkesboro; five great-grandchildren: Shayla Keathley, Tanner Keathley, Bailee Martin, Emma Keathley and Jackson Martin; and a great-great-granddaughter: Layla Livingston, all of Princeton; Sister-in-law, Wanda Belcher of Summersville, WV; Several nieces, nephews, friends and his church family also survive. Funeral services for Jerry Carroll Martin will be conducted Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Lindside, with Pastor Paul Monroe, Pastor J. W. Ellison and Evangelist Barry Daniel officiating. Friends may call Friday from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton and one hour prior to the services at the church. Graveside services will be held Monday, May 20, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Garden of the Good Shepherd) in Princeton. Those wishing to attend the services are requested to meet at the funeral home no later than 1:30 P.M. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cherith Bible Institute, P.O. Box 168, Lindside, WV 24951.
