Obituary

Oscar Douglas MacArthur Toler, 79, of Athens, died Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at West Virginia University Medical Center. Born May 4, 1942, in Simon, he was the son of the late Rufus H. and Clista M. Toler. Doug grew up in Wyoming County and committed himself to doggedly pursue a college education and a career in teaching.  Toward that pursuit, he enrolled at Concord College after graduating from high school. At Concord, he met a young Connie Gadd, who would become the love of his life and led him to his cherished Johnston Chapel Baptist Church and a relationship with the Lord that lasted all his days thereafter.  The two married at the church in 1970, and JCBC was woven deeply into all of their story. Doug's loves were his family, faith, and most anything outdoors.  He thrived on hunting, fishing, golf, and even horseshoes; but he could cheer on his beloved WVU Mountaineers and Los Angeles Dodgers with unequaled ferocity. He was a longtime member of the Athens Lions Club, faithfully serving on campaigns to clean up litter, support annual calendar sales, and provide glasses for those in need. In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his loving wife Connie. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Tammie Toler, of Elgood; Sisters, Frieda Harman and Linda Hatfield and her husband, Glenn; Nieces, April Clay and husband, Eric, Carla Stewart and her husband Jason, and Cristi Jones and her husband, Paul; Sister-in-law, Debbie Mitchem and her husband Danny. He also leaves behind several special friends, including Jack Adams, Suzanna Tilley Hanham, and multiple great-nieces and great-nephews, including Matthew Williams, who had lived with him and kept him safe in recent months. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2022, from the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Jim Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family Monday, May 2, 2022, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Curry, Steven Maynard, Kenny Monk, Jason Stewart, Alvin White, Mike White, Tony White and Matthew Williams.
