Obituary

Mary Elaine Butler, 92, of Princeton, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday afternoon, November 19, 2024, at her home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born July 17, 1932, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Charles Thorn and Junie Scott Thorn. Elaine was a graduate of Concord Training School (Athens High School) and Concord College. She devoted 39 years of her life to teaching in Mercer County Schools, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.

Elaine was a member of Silver Springs Baptist Church, later rededicating her life to the Lord with Lilly Grove Baptist Church. Her sharp sense of humor and quick wit brought laughter to those around her, making her a joy to be near.

Elaine enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening, and even playing softball until the impressive age of 49. She had a knack for making others smile, especially her grandchildren, who brightened her life and held a special place in her heart. Whenever someone told her they loved her, Elaine always replied, "I love you more," leaving no doubt about the depth of her love for her family.

In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl R. Butler; two children, Cheri Lynn Hurst and Terry Duane Butler; a grandson, Richard (Ricky) Lee Butler; and eight siblings: Charlie, Joe, Marvin, Carlyle, Crystal "Cubbie," Alice, Edith, and Mabel "Dutch." Elaine was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Carl "Boe" Butler Jr., Kelly Butler (Vanasa), Mary Ann Linkous (David), Tona Lumpkin (Walter), Dee Dee Hill, Richard Hurst, and Tom Hurst (Karen); a special niece, Faith Burress (Leonard); 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; Two sister-in-laws, Georgia Quick (Dewey) and Marie Dove; A host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
