Obituary

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15

With her husband of 69 years holding her hand and all of her family by her side, our merciful Heavenly Father called His faithful servant home. Martha Ann Evans Alvis, 89 of Princeton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 7, 2026 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born April 23, 1937, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late G. V. Evans and Ruby Gearheart Evans. Martha graduated from Princeton High School, Class of 1955. She retired from Mercer County Schools with 33 ½ years of service. Martha was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Princeton. When she was able, she loved to read, study the Bible, and piece quilts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her daughter-in-law, Karen Riley Alvis, and siblings, Maude, Frankie, Nadine, Bud, Patty, her twin sister, Mary, Ira, Sharon, and Michael. Martha married Jerry Alfred Alvis on February 20, 1957, and together they shared a beautiful life. Those left to cherish her memory, besides Jerry, are her three children: David Alvis, Rebecca Lilly and husband Timothy, and Mark Alvis. Grandchildren are Caroline Pounds (Jason), Michael Alvis (Stefanie), Chris Brewster (Missy), Hannah Brewster, Ethan Alvis, Scott Lilly, Matthew Lilly, and Luke Lilly (Emily). She was blessed to live to see four great-grandchildren: Alana, Elliott, Reagan, and Tig Mae. She is survived by two siblings, James Rodney Evans and Karen Tignor, along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Martha Alvis will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 12, 2026, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road, Princeton, with Pastors Dr. Dan Jividen and Jamie Mattox officiating. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery in Athens. Friends may visit with the family Saturday from 11:00 AM until the service hour. Serving as pallbearers will be Martha’s grandsons: Michael, Ethan, Shane, Scott, Matthew, and Luke. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Mosier and Ronnie Knight. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church.

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8
