Maria Elma
Gonzalez Moye
Sep 21, 1941 — Nov 15, 2025
Maria Elma Gonzalez Moye (September 12, 1941 – November 15, 2025)
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
- Proverbs 31:10
Maria Elma Gonzalez Moye, 84, of Hurricane, West Virginia, formerly of Rock, West Virginia, died on November 15, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. As she shared prior to her death, God gave her a long life, a wonderful family, and a good life for the most part. Who could ask for more?
Having personally received Jesus Christ as her Savior, Elma was able to face death with peace knowing that she had eternal life in heaven when her life on earth was over. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God -1 John 5:11-13.
Elma was born in Duval County, Texas, on September 12, 1941, to Jesus and Gorgonia (Cantu) Gonzalez. She met her husband of 64 years, JD, in Kingsville, Texas, while he was serving in the Navy. They were married on September 3, 1961. When JD's time in service was over, he and Elma moved to JD's home state of West Virginia. Life in West Virginia was very different for Elma, but she adjusted to the changes, overcame the challenges, and went on to make West Virginia her home for many years. During those years, Elma always served as a wonderful example of a good wife, a loving mother, and a faithful keeper of her home. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her -Proverbs 31:27-28.
In addition to her parents, Elma was preceded in death by three brothers, Jesus (Jessie) Gonzalez, Pablo Gonzalez, and Adan Gonzalez; and by one sister, Consuelo Gonzalez Games.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, John David "JD" Moye; her children, Mark Moye and wife Roberta of Teays Valley, West Virginia; David Moye and wife Beverly of Ona, West Virginia; and Rodney Moye and wife Diana of White Plains, Maryland; two sisters, Maria Elda Gonzalez Zwierlien and Aminta "Amy" Gonzalez both of Rochester, New York; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private service on Friday, November 21, at Rich Creek Baptist Church in Spanishburg, West Virginia, with Pastor James Mattox officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Teays Valley Baptist Church, Hurricane, West Virginia;
Rich Creek Baptist Church, Spanishburg, West Virginia; or Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia.
