Judy Marie Shumate Pentecost, 79, of Emporia VA formerly of Athens, died Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Emporia VA.  Born December 28, 1946, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Shumate & Agnes Ory Shumate. Judy graduated from Athens High School and retired as a CNA after many years of service in the health care industry. She was a member of the Church of Nazarene in Athens. Judy was an avid reader, besides reading her Bible, she loved Amish romances. Judy was a strong person, determined to make a better life not only for herself but also those around her. She loved animals and had too many fur babies to name. Her remaining dog, Baby, still resides in Emporia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Gene Edward Pentecost. Those left to cherish her memory, her son James Elkins Pentecost, three siblings, David Shumate & wife Kelly, Mary Stiff, Robert “Bob” Shumate & wife Julie along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 29. 2026, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Stanley Mitz officiating. Burial will follow in the Athens Cemetery in Athens. Friends may visit with the family Saturday from Noon until the service hour.
