Obituary

John Arrington III passed away peacefully on the morning of January 1st at his home in Fredericksburg, VA surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 10, 1947 in Davin, WV, he was the son of John Arrington Jr. and Victoria Elam Arrington of Eckman, WV.  John, also known as Johnny, Jr, Dad, Pappaw, and friend fought a courageous and hard 22-day battle after suffering a massive brain bleed, but he is now walking the streets of gold with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After graduating in 1966 from Northfork High School at Northfork, WV, John married the love of his life, Diana, in 1968. They lived in Powhatan, WV until they moved to OK in 1991. John spent the majority of his life working in and around coal mining. John worked underground and at the tipple at United Pocahontas Coal Co. in Algoma, WV for 22 years. He worked in various positions such as shuttle car operator, electrician, and car dropper. He was a member of the mine rescue team while at Algoma and was the captain of the team one year. While Captain, the team won a 1st place trophy at a National Mine Rescue contest. When the mines began closing in McDowell County, he applied for a Federal Coal Mine Electrical Inspector position with MSHA and was hired in 1991.  He and his wife moved to McAlester, OK and stayed there three years. From there he went to Barbourville, KY as a Federal Coal Mine Supervisor for three years. He and Diana decided they wanted to move back to OK and build a home and stay there permanently so, he went back to OK as an Inspector for three years. He then began applying for supervisor positions back East. In 2005, he was hired in Whitesburg, KY and moved to Clintwood, VA as a Supervisor for three years. In 2008 he was hired in Arlington, VA at the Mine Safety & Health Administration headquarters as a Specialist . He worked in Arlington until he retired from MSHA in 2014.  Aside from work accomplishments, John was a martial artist and received a 2nd degree black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do in 1982. At tournaments, he won numerous 1st place trophies fighting. He and his wife were, also, Tae-Kwon-Do instructors in Crumpler, WV. He also won several 1st place trophies at fishing tournaments throughout his life. He enjoyed playing the bass guitar in church and coaching his grandchildren's soccer teams when they were younger.  Once retired, John spent his time doing the things he enjoyed the most. He loved being able to spend more time with his family, traveling to Bluefield, VA to watch his granddaughter, Megan, play softball while she attended Bluefield College. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, working around the house, fishing with his friends Kenny and Mike and his granddaughter, helping his friend, Jess, with his Mustang and enjoyed their monthly Golden Corral lunches, working on lawnmowers, competing in a yearly NFL Fantasy Football family competition which he won in 2021, going out with his wife, and eating lunch with his grandson, Matthew, while watching sports and talking. He loved working on his 1974 VW Beetle with his daughter, Beverly.  John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Victoria Arrington, two brothers, Tommy and Jimmy Arrington, one sister, Teresa Arrington Torres, one nephew, David Arrington, and one niece, Alicia Torres.  John is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 56 years, Diana Arrington, formerly from Northfork, WV, their daughter Beverly Arrington, and his two grandchildren Matthew and Megan Arrington. He is also survived by his brother, DeLane Arrington and wife Marilyn, his sisters Diane McPeak and husband Mike McPeak, Evelyn (Rudy)Arrington, and Kathleen (Kat) Miller, his nieces Michelle and Savannah Stafford, Tina Miller, Vickie Lynn Miller, Amber Mullis, Angie Graham, Renee Arrington-Turner, and nephew Jimmy Arrington.  John's personality brought warmth and joy to everyone he encountered and his passing will be mourned deeply by everyone who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his love for his family and friends, his helping hands, and his contagious laughter, humor and smile. His legacy will live on for generations to come, inspiring those around him with his kindheartedness, generosity, and unforgettable spirit. John will always be remembered for his passion for his Savior. He loved talking about Jesus and the Bible. One of his favorite scriptures was John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved."
