Obituary

On Saturday, April 29, 2023, Mrs. Jo Ann Poe Lewis, passed away peacefully at home in Welch, WV with loved ones by her side. Jo Ann was born February 2, 1930, in Alderson, WV, and is the daughter of the late Donald Edgar, and the late Eva Mae Ealy Poe. She is survived by two younger sisters, to whom she spoke with often, Rosemary Poe (late Don) Brown, of Seattle, WA, and Jackie Poe (late Graydon) Lose, of Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Lewis is a graduate of Welch High School. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Hiram Carson "Kit" Lewis, Jr. They raised their five children in Welch, WV and spent the summer months at their family camp on the banks of the Elk River in Elkhurst, Clay County, West Virginia. Jo Ann was a lover of nature and animals. She enjoyed the outdoors, crafting, cooking, collecting antiques and playing Bridge with friends. Most of all, with all her heart, she loved nurturing those in need and practiced the ministry of availability throughout her life. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Hiram Carson "Kibby" (Debbie) Lewis III, of Clay, WV; Debra Ann Lewis Lawson, of Greensboro, NC; Robert Donald "Bobby" (Dee Dee) Lewis, of Morgantown, WV; Charles Leonard "Lenny" (Mary) Lewis, of Welch, WV; and the late Terri Lynn Lewis Byrd. Jo Ann's grandchildren include Renee Arnold (Mike) Lowery, Hiram Carson "Bucky" Lewis IV, the late Robert "Carson" Lewis, Carrie Ann Lewis (Derek) Fowler, Anthony Joseph "Tony" (Sosha) Lewis, Lynn Marie Lewis, Shelley Jo Lawson, Ashley Ann Lawson, Tracie Lewis (Jason) Evans, Will (Sarah) Turner, Ashleigh Turner (KD) Burdette, Ryan Lewis Lawson, Lyndsey Jo Turner, and Rachel Lewis (Justin) Rice. Great-grandchildren include Madisen Burns, Zachary Lewis, Tara Lowery, Brooke Lowery, Caleb Lawson, Conley Lewis, Eva Burdette, Maya Kessler, Anna Kessler, Zalen Ward, Roselyn Evans, Brody Burdette, Gia Evans, Jayceon Joyce, Bria Ward, Emmalynn Albright and Sonya Rice. Jo Ann especially loved her camp cousins the Lewis, Baird, Chenoweth, Kilpatrick, Edick, and Winefordner families. Along with many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family has honored Jo's request to be cremated. Jo Ann and Kit will be honored with a Celebration of their Lives at Elkhurst, WV on a later date. In lieu of flowers Jo Ann requested a donation be made to the McDowell County Humane Society, PO Box 714, Welch, WV 24801 (304)436-2185.
