Obituary

Jessie Elwood Hammonds, 83, of Princeton, died Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Glenwood Healthcare Center. Born September 13, 1943, at Princeton, WV.

He was the son of the late Alfred and Beatrice Hammonds. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ashley Hammonds. His brothers; Franklin Hammonds, Roger Hammonds, Bobby Hammonds and James Hammonds, sisters; Kathleen Thomas and Irene Thomas, and cousins, Dewey Hammonds and Joyce Hammonds.

He worked as a janitor for Mercer County schools, Bartlett Tree Service, and road construction. When younger he loved to be on the river fishing and camping. Even older he loved to just be outside in nature walking around. He loved his family most of all. He enjoyed going to chapel services and his therapy sessions while at Glenwood. He was always smiling and never met a stranger. Always asking about how everybody else was doing. Just a few hours before passing he was asking how others were.

Survivors include his children; Jeannie & Kevin O’Donnell, Jackie Ray & Tammy Hammonds, Missy & Danny Taylor, Michael Hammonds, and Shawn Hammonds, sisters; Lillie Mae Seal and Barbara Chaplin, and sister in-law Bernice Hammonds, grandchildren; Matthew & Rose Pettrey, Alyssa & Matthew Lewis, Dakota Caldwell. Along with two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews all the way to a great-great-great-nephew. Also, a special friend Cindy Combs.

Funeral services will be held 1:00P.M., Thursday, October 22, 2026, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Jonathan Hall officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00P.M. until service time. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park located in Princeton, WV.
