Obituary

J.D. Thomason, 85, of Galax Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2023, in Bluefield Virginia. He was born on May 2, 1938. J.D., a man of humble and gentle spirit, was deeply cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.  Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Alice Thomason, his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Terri Buckner, his daughter, Angela Buckner, his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Colton and Mandy Buckner, his granddaughter, Jessie Marshal, his grandson, Noah Martin, his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amber and Anthony Bowling, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. J.D. also leaves behind a legacy of love through his three great-grandchildren. J.D was preceded in death by his loving parents, Lee and Inez Baker Thomason, his dear brothers, Harry Thomason, Clarence Thomason, and Bobby Thomason, his beloved sisters Mary Hawks, Helen Thomason, Betty Reid, and Dorthy Tillotson. Their memories will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew J.D. In his pursuit of knowledge, J.D. attended Galax High School where he was a well-known star football player. He furthered his education at East Tennessee State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Throughout his professional journey, J.D. exemplified dedication and leadership. He served as a lifeguard at the City of Galax Public Pool and as a supervisor at Penreys Textiles, New Galax Mirror, and American Mirror. His commitment to excellence and his humble demeanor left lasting impacts on all those he encountered. J.D. found solace and spiritual nourishment in his faith, worshipping at Community Chapel Baptist Church. His devotion to God instilled within him a deep sense of gratitude for the wonders of creation and profound respect for all beings. In his leisure time, J.D. found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, golf, football, and baseball. He especially enjoyed watching Galax High School and the Minnesota Vikings play football. He was a profound harmonica player and played a gospel hymn most Sundays at church. To honor J.D. Thomason's life, a memorial service will be held at a later date, providing an opportunity for loved ones to gather and celebrate the profound impact he had on their lives. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the American Heart Association.
