Obituary

Herman Wesley "Butch" Mattox, Jr., 75, of Welch, formerly of Pineville, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Born December 8, 1949, in High Point, NC, he was the son of the late Herman Wesley Mattox, Sr. and Vassar Edwards Mattox. After graduating from Troy High School in North Carolina, Butch would continue his education at Carson-Newman University. Butch spent his life serving the community and helping others as a Paramedic and served proudly as "Captain Mattox" at Jan-Care Ambulance for 37 years. Where he served as training officer, chaplain and grief counselor. He enjoyed watching nascar, being outdoors, camping, going to the Smokey Mountains and taking photographs of bears in Cades Coves. Butch would pass his love for community and the outdoors to several generations as a Scout Leader for 42 years. He was so honored when his son Drew received the highest award in Boy Scouts Of American Known as The Eagle Scout at the age of 13. He was so Proud of his daughters and their life accomplishments. Butch was a long standing member of Cook Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Gray, nephew, Bill Tabb, and In-Laws, Paul and Cleo Carosi. Butch is survived by his loving and best friend of 45 years, Paula, of their forever home; Daughter, Charish (Donnie) of Princeton, Amber, of Beckley, and her Boyfriend Jonah; Son, Andrew (Kaityln) of Lake Field, Minnesota; Six Grand-Children, Michael, Cierra, Nate, Ben, Damien and Lea; and Sister, Dianne Tabb, of Texas; a host of nieces and nephews and Brothers and Sisters Of EMS and Boy Scouts of America.

Services will be held at Cook Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, WV, on Monday, June 9th with a visitation from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life from 6p.m.-7p.m. Honor Guard and Honorary EMS Service will be conducted by Jan-Care Ambulance.
