Obituary

George Stevenson, Jr, 74, of Princeton, formerly of Alpoca, passed away on September 25, 2023, at Ruby Memorial hospital, following a short illness. George was born on January 26, 1949, in Davy, WV to George Stevenson Sr. and the late Ruth Jennings Stevenson. George was a 1967 graduate of Herndon High School. He was a coal miner for 35 years, where he worked as an electrician and mechanic, retiring  from U.S. Steel's #50 mine.  Besides enjoying time with his family, whom he dearly loved, George always loved being on a lake, fishing, participating in water sports, or racing in his Checkmate speedboat. He was an outstanding water skier, being able to barefoot, slalom ski, and perform several stunts on trick skis.  He was also an avid golfer and and liked pitching horseshoes.  In the last few years, George preferred spending the majority of his free time riding his motorcycle with Cathy. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Brady Lankford, mother-in-law, Dovie Lankford and his brother-in-law, James "Jimmy" Lankford. In addition to  his dad, he is survived by his loving wife of 55 1/2 years, Cathy, a son, Mickey Stevenson, of Midland, NC, a daughter, Michelle (Chris) Quinn, of Leesburg, GA, two grandsons which he adored, Steven McElroy of Beckley, WV, and Caleb Quinn of Leesburg, Ga, 5 brothers and sisters, James (Diane) Stevenson of Lexington, NC, Lenora Sizemore of Holly Springs, NC,  Debbie (Mike) Skeens of Beckley, WV, Timmy Stevenson of Mullens, WV, and Sandy Deeb Of Bluff City, TN. Also left to cherish his memory are his sister-in laws, Debbie (Chris) Milam of Manson, NC, Judy (Roy "Pete") O'Neal of Mullens, WV, Darene Lankford of Princeton, WV and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service to celebrate George's life will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 30, 2023, in the Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, with Rev. Gerald McKinney and Rev. Randall Topping officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 P.M. until the service hour at the funeral home.  Please wear casual attire (No dress clothes!) and be ready to share any of your favorite memories/stories. In lieu of flowers, the family request a donation in George's name be made to: Alive Animal Services Group, C/o Safe Haven Sanctuary, 223 Surratt Street, Bluefield, WV 24701.
