Obituary

George D. Erps

George Dennis Erps, a lifelong educator, coach, administrator, mentor, and faithful follower of Jesus Christ, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on July 14, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m. (EST) at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, West Virginia.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Erps; his parents, Robert and Evelyn Erps; his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce Ann and Melvin McBride; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Catherine Erps; and his sister, Donna Erps.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Sue Erps; his brother, Claude Erps; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, extended family members, and countless friends, former students, colleagues, and members of the communities throughout southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia whose lives were enriched by his friendship and love.

A graduate of Concord College, George devoted his professional life to education. He began his career as a teacher and football coach at Bluefield High School, where his commitment to students earned him the respect of those around him. From there, he served as principal of Bluefield High School before being appointed Assistant Superintendent of Mercer County Schools, where he faithfully served students, educators, and families throughout the county.

Even after retiring from Mercer County Schools, George’s passion for education remained strong. He accepted a second career as Principal of Education for the Virginia Department of Corrections, overseeing programs and staff in correctional facilities throughout southwest Virginia.

Following his second retirement, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He authored several books, traveled extensively, and treasured the companionship of his dear friend, Joy Robinette, with whom he shared countless adventures. Together they visited every West Virginia State Park, enjoyed many meals at their favorite restaurants around Princeton, and faithfully cheered on the Bluefield Beavers at home and away. Those years were marked by laughter, friendship, and gratitude for the beauty of the Mountain State they both loved.

George was known and loved throughout the region. Deeply devoted to his family, George was a father figure to many. As an educator and administrator, he influenced generations of students and teachers, leaving an enduring legacy that extended far beyond the classroom.

Above all else, George had a strong and steady faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His humble Christian faith shaped the way he lived, served, led, and loved others, providing a quiet but unmistakable testimony throughout his life.

To know George was to love him. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, but they grieve with the sure hope that, because of his faith in Christ, he has entered into the eternal presence of the One he loved and served so faithfully.

A celebration of George’s life will be held in the Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, 654 Athens Road, Princeton, WV, on Saturday, July 18 at 1:00 pm with visitation at 12 noon. A graveside service will be held immediately afterwards at Appalachian Conference Center Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia. Services will be officiated by George’s pastor, Ray Jones of First Church of God, Princeton, and his nephew, William Erps, Jr, chaplain in the U.S. Air Force.
