Obituary

Mr. Donald L. Wood, a resident of Bluefield, West Virginia passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born to John and Julia Wood and spent most of his youth in Dunns, WV. He entered the Air Force in 1958 and worked as a crew chief on the F100 Super Saber. After his tenure in the service, he went to Bluefield State and graduated as a civil engineer. From there he worked as an engineer at several coal companies and ended his career with the Department of Natural Resources. Don, as he was affectionately known, spent much time in the service of Our Lord at Greenview United Methodist Church. He was passionate about service to the church and its congregation and was always a willing participant in any activity. Mr. Wood is survived by his companion Sharon Conner of Princeton West Virginia; his daughter Beth Wood and son-in-law Neill Cowles of Athens, Alabama; his grandson Coby Cowles and wife Sara Cowles, and great-grandson Phelps of Huntsville, Alabama; his granddaughter Kayla Cowles and great-granddaughters McKenzie and Riley of Wilmer, Alabama; sisters Wanda Ellison (Leslie Ellison) and Juanita Dunn (Tommy Dunn); and a much beloved host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. His extended family includes Sharon's daughter Rhonda Reedy (Ed Reedy) and daughters, spouses, and children as well as Chris Calo and son and daughter and family who were all much loved. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Greenview United Methodist Church in Green Valley with Pastor Marva Smearman officiating.  Military rites will be provided by the Seymour Johnson Honor Guard.  Entombment will follow in the Calfee Cemetery in Green Valley.  Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until the service hour at the church. The family as requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Greenview United Methodist Church, 600 Blue Prince Road, Bluefield, WV  24701.  He also respected our first responders and was a long-time member of the board at the Green Valley Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department. Volunteers from the department will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com . The Wood family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
