Dennis Aven
Mckinney
Apr 30, 1963 — Feb 21, 2026
Dennis Aven McKinney, born April 30, 1963, of Stephenson, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, February 21, 2026. His passing has left a silence in our lives that words cannot fully express.
He was the son of Alberta McKinney and the late Louie Aven McKinney. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anna McKinney, and his beloved grandson, Gabriel McKinney.
Dad shared 31 years of life and love with Brenda McKinney. Their time together was built on loyalty, devotion, and a deep commitment to family. Above all else, he was a provider and protector.
He leaves behind his children: Samantha (Timmy) Cantrell of Pineville, WV; Andrea (Jason) McKinney of Barkers Ridge, WV; Jarrett (Sara) Shrewsbury of Stephenson, WV; and Dylan Shrewsbury of Herndon, WV. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Gaven McKinney, Jerzie Meadows, Brody Griffith, Alyse Shrewsbury, and Bryson McKinney. Along with his children and grandchildren, he leaves behind his special nephew, Evan McKinney, whom he loved dearly.
Our dad spent 40 years driving a truck, with the last 15 years hauling coal. He worked long hours and hard days without complaint because providing for his family wasn't just something he did — it was who he was. He poured every second of his soul into making sure we were safe, supported, and guided in the right direction.
During his years hauling coal, he built more than a career — he built lasting friendships. The men he worked alongside were more than coworkers to him; they were like family. He spoke of them often, cared deeply for their safety and well-being, and took pride in being part of that brotherhood. The coal fields gave him lifelong friendships, and those men became part of the story of his life — a story he was proud to tell.
He was our voice of reason. Our calm in chaos. The steady hand and the peaceful heart that held us together.
Some of his greatest joy came from his grandchildren. He loved nothing more than watching them ride their four-wheelers and motorcycles around his yard, standing back with that quiet smile, simply enjoying their happiness and freedom. Those moments meant everything to him — and now they mean everything to us.
Dad's strength, wisdom, and unwavering love built the foundation our family stands on. We will carry his lessons, his work ethic, and his steady spirit with us every day.
He was deeply loved. He will be deeply missed. And he will always be our home.
