Charlton "Chuck"
Lewis Coburn
Sep 9, 1957 — Mar 13, 2025
Charlton "Chuck" Lewis Coburn, 67, of Little Island Creek, WV, died peacefully on the morning of March 13, 2025, at his home, Walnut Creek Farm. Chuck was born on September 9, 1957, to the late Ila Butler Coburn and James "Jiggs" Coburn. He graduated from Athens High School, where he met his lifelong sweetheart, in 1975. Chuck worked as a hydraulic mechanic for most of his life, most recently for United Industrial Services from which he retired. He was a member of the Church of the Word in Lerona. Chuck worked hard day in and day out to provide for his family. He sought to live like Jesus and honor God in all he did. He enjoyed spending time in scripture, counseling and encouraging people, sharing the hope found in God's Word – both from the pulpit and in how he lived his life, tending to his cows and to the land, dreaming up and executing projects – sometimes to comedic effect, telling stories, playing pranks, listening to music, gardening, and most of all, spending time with his family. Our dad was a man of great faith and humility. He was stronger and tougher than anyone we knew but was also gentle and caring. He always came through for us. Even as his illness took so much from him, he refused to grow bitter and instead assured us of his trust in the Lord's just plan for his life, however it played out. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his mother-in-law Helen Smith, father-in-law Noah Smith, sister-in-law Rachael Curry, brothers-in-law Wayne Cottle and Jerry Meadows, nephew Anthony R. Simpson, and his grandparents. He especially looked forward to being welcomed home by his special Pawpaw Kermit Butler. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary Smith Coburn, who took such great care of him through his illness; three loving children and their spouses (whom he loved like his own) – Richard Coburn and wife Michelle of Little Island Creek, David "Larry" Coburn and wife Tammy of Princeton, Amanda Wenisch and husband Jeremy of Princeton; the light of his life – his grandchildren Nathaniel Coburn, Elizabeth Coburn, Hunter Dorman, Thomas Williams, and Brantley Williams; his dear siblings – Gwenda (Dewey) Anderson, Barbara (Buster) Thompson, Mitchell (Ellen) Coburn, Rebecca (Randy) Simpson, and David (Allena) Coburn; sister-in-law Janice Meadows; brother-in-law Robert Curry; extended family, neighbors, and friends. He loved well and was well-loved. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Dr. Marshall Long for everything he did to care for Chuck; to TJ and Janet from Compassus Hospice, for taking such good care of him and us; to Kermit Wiley for his kindness; and to the people, even across the country, who remembered him in their prayers. "Weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning." Funeral services to celebrate the life of Charlton "Chuck" Coburn will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, March 17, 2025, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Richard Coburn and Rev.
