Obituary

Carroll Henderson "Hoover" Fry, 94, passed away November 25, 2024, at Glenwood Park Healthcare Center.  He was the son of the late James W Fry and Thelma E Fry (Hawks). He was born on May 3, 1930 in Matoaka, West Virginia. He graduated from Princeton high school in 1948 where he excelled in football and basketball and he was on the 1948 championship basketball team and on the all area football team.

After working a short stent in the coal mines, he joined the Air Force where he served for four years during the Korean War. On September 20, 1958, he married the love of his life, Zylpha E Carbaugh. Most of his adult life he drove a semi tractor-trailer for Smith Transfer and Overnite Transportation. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing was his great passion. He enjoyed sharing his experiences with his father, brothers, family, and friends, and especially with his son, Kevin. Not only did he pass on his love for the outdoors, but was also a gentleman farmer. He always had a beautiful garden and raised Herford cattle. In addition, he loved his bees. After retirement, he started beekeeping. Hoover soon became a great beekeeper, mentor, and teacher. He served as president of the Mercer County Beekeepers Association for several years.

He was a lifelong member of Greenview United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dwight Fry, sister, Bernice Bolton, and sister-in-law, Frances Fry.

His survivors include, sister, Sarah Cahill (Jim) of Princeton and brother James Fry of Kingsport, Tennessee. Children: Kevin Fry(Sharon) of Bluefield , Lynn Collins (William) of Lincoln, NE; Grandchildren: Katelyne Fry, Kelsey Clarke Thomas), Ann Heidbrink (Marty), Sarah Irvin(Jay); Great-grandchildren: Easton Irvin, Stella Irvin, Elle Thomas, Isaiah Heidbrink, Esme Heidbrink and Cain Clarke.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M.,  Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Marva Smearman officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, from 10:00 A.M. until the service hour at the funeral home. A luncheon will follow the burial at the Greenview, United Methodist Church, 600 Blue Prince Road, Bluefield, WV 24701. Pallbearers will be: Kevin Fry, Bill Collins, Charlie Mathena, Mark O'Shaughnessy, Mason Walker and John Maxey. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Greenview, United Methodist Church, 600 Blue Prince Road, Bluefield, WV 24701.
