Obituary

Carrie Phyllis Taylor Yurkovich, 87, of Glenwood, passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday, April 10,  2024. Born April 22, 1936, in Roderfield, WV, Carrie was a daughter of Alfred J. and Minnie Reed Taylor. From a young age, Carrie possessed an independent spirit. She began working at age 14 while attending high school full time.  At 18, Carrie enlisted as a WAC in the Women's Army Corps. She was stationed at West Point, where she worked first as company clerk and later as a medical secretary in the U.S. Army Hospital.  After her military service, Carrie began a career of 30+ years at Stevens Clinic Hospital in Welch, ultimately retiring as supervisor of the medical transcription department. She was an example to her daughters that a woman could nurture not only her children but also herself.  Also a 3-time cancer survivor, Carrie inspired all who knew her.  In June of 1959, Carrie married Matt W. Yurkovich, and they navigated life together for 53½ years until his death in 2013. They lived and raised their family in Welch and Gary, moving to Mercer County upon Matt's retirement in 1983. For the next 41 years, Carrie was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Princeton.  Carrie held a deep appreciation of the natural world. She had a special affinity for the rain and loved the moon, the desert, birds, flowers, rocks, and mountains. Her love of the earth extended to gardening alongside her husband and carefully preserving the fruits of these labors by canning and freezing.  Carrie's extended family and friends also knew her for her excellent home cooking and abundant hospitality. When visiting Carrie's house, children delighted in playing with her, while adults enjoyed her conversation and storytelling, often characterized by her wry or self-deprecating humor.  Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Matt; an infant son, Paul; sisters Lorene Reed and Betty Shore; brother Walter Taylor; and son-in-law David Frei. Among the many treasuring her memory are her daughters: Annette Brichford (Charles) of Princeton; Paula Yurkovich of Glenwood, her devoted caregiver for more than five years; and Mary Piper of Kirkwood, MO; a brother, Carl Taylor of Lindside, WV; a sister, Lois Ann Taylor of Land 'O Lakes, Florida; six grandchildren: Virginia Shumate Mault (Michael) of Frisco, TX; Paul Bell (Angela) of Stanfield, NC; Austin Bell of Stanley, NC; Kieran Piper of St. Louis, MO; Shannon Piper (Brendon Perry) and Abby Piper of Lake St. Louis, MO; and one great-grandchild, Ava Marie Bell, who was a special light in her later life. Carrie was also a beloved aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews.  A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 507 Harrison St., Princeton, with Father Sebastian Devasaya as celebrant. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the service hour at the church. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery on Courthouse Road in Princeton.
