Carl Wayne Urps, 78, of Princeton, formerly of Davy and Welch, died peaceful Monday, May 1, 2023, at his home. Born May 29, 1944, at Davy, he was the son of the late Allen B. Urps and Margaret Cline Urps. Carl was a graduate of Welch High School, Class of 1962 and Bluefield Business College. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. While living in McDowell County, Carl served as President of Urps Metal & Recycling until his retirement in 2018. Carl was very active in civic and government affairs. He served as a volunteer fireman for the city of Davy, served as Mayor of Davy for many years and was a member of the McDowell County Commission for 12 years. Carl was very instrumental in getting the Stevens Correctional facility in Welch as well as the Federal Prison. He had served on the Board of Directors for the McDowell County National Bank in Welch, and was a member of the Welch Lions Club, Forty & Eight, Welch Masonic Lodge and the Beni Kedem Temple of Charleston. Carl was a member of the First Church of God in Davy, upon moving to Princeton, and while his health permitted, he was a member of the First Church of God on Mahood Avenue in Princeton. For Carl, the most important things in his life were his grandsons, they were the light of life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by two siblings: JanEllen Dalton and Allen B. Urps Jr. Those left to cherish his memory, his childhood sweetheart, best friend and wife of 59 years, Ruth Ann Cook Urps; Three children, Tonya Urps and husband Gary Colbert of Charlotte, NC, Traci and Will Renn of Princeton and Matthew and Heather Urps of Huntersville, NC; Two grandsons; Jakob Fedele and Liam Renn; One sister, Beverly Schellato of Barboursville, IN. Services to celebrate the life of Carl Wayne Urps will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Ray Jones officiating. Burial with military graveside rites provided by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday from Noon until the service hour. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com .
