Carl Thomas Powell Sr. 77 of Princeton WV passed away in Blackstone, VA on March 3,2023 with his loving wife of 54 years by his side. Carl fought a long and hard battle with Parkinson's disease but is now at peace with his heavenly father above. Carl was born on November 6, 1945 to Ollie and Francis Powell of McDowell county and attended Princeton High School before joining the Army where he served tours in both Germany and Vietnam. Following his service, he lived and worked in Ohio for 27 years after which he and his family returned to West Virginia and worked for the Department of Highways and retired after 20 years. During that time, he earned an associate degree in Transportation Engineering. He is proceeded in death by both parents as well as brothers Kenneth, Charles and David Powell; sisters Grace Pendleton and Judy Testerman and his only son Carl Powell Jr. Survivors include his wife Violet, daughters Angela Ingram (Robbie) of Princeton and Dawn Hicks (Dwight) of Chesterfield, VA, sister Phyllis Shepherd; brothers James (Mary Ann), Lee (Velvet), Paul (Felicia), and Randy (Carolyn). He was a loving grandfather to 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was a long-time member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Eads Mill Road in Princeton, WV. He was also a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Princeton Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in the Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastors Bill Crawford and Richard Godfrey officiating. Burial with military graveside rites provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday (today) from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Rich Miller, Tony Billings, Duane Crawford, Roger Popp, Danny Hurley and Bert Levesque. Honorary pallbearer will be Paul Feathers.
