Obituary

Betty Louise Patteson Long, 79, of Patteson Lane, Bluefield, died peacefully, Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at her residence. Born, May 10, 1942, in Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Patteson and Exie Gore Patteson. Betty was a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Betty was a 1960 graduate of Bluefield High School. She worked for the Mercer County Board of Education as a secretary at both Ceres and Mountain Valley Elementary Schools in Green Valley. She retired from her role as school secretary in 2021. Betty worked with the Mercer County Vocational Rehab, the Mercer County Health Department, and with the Princeton Community Hospital Foundation. She was very proud to serve as the first woman County Administrator in Mercer County. Betty was active with the GFWC, having been a longtime member the GFWC Valley Women's Club, she served as President for the Southern District of GFWC and later served as Secretary for the West Virginia GFWC. Betty was a member of Silver Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Lee "Jim" Long, Sr., siblings, Pearl Fortner, Clayton Patteson, Kyle Patteson, Crozier Patteson and Tommy Patterson. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Susan Johnston and husband Herb, James L. "Jimmy" Long, Jr. and wife Lizeth, Julia Lynn Long; Three grandchildren, Kristina North and husband Zachary, Paul Johnston and wife Emily, Alexandra Long; Siblings, Sue Lilly and husband Clinton, Launa Barrett, Ruby Carroll, Rosella Bird and James Patteson; Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Several brother and sister-in-laws. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 19, 2022, from the Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastors Richard Carbaugh and Justin White officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 A.M. until the service hour at the funeral home. If you wish to honor Betty's life, memorial gifts can be made to the PCH Foundation Inc, P.O.  1369, Princeton WV 24740. Those unable to attend can view her services on our website.
