Bernice Marie
(Mickey) Hughes
Aug 31, 1932 — Feb 8, 2026
Bernice Marie (Mickey) Hughes, of Lerona, WV, left for heaven on February 8, 2026, at Glenwood Nursing Home. Born August 31, 1932, in Keystone, WV, to Posey and Alice Bolt, she was the youngest of 17 children and the last surviving member of the family.
Marie loved the Lord and her church family. But her greatest love was for her children and her grandchildren.
She was a longtime active member of Grace Christian Church. Being a homemaker for most of her 93 years, Marie shared her special talent of cooking homemade meals for family and those who are considered family, especially pies! She loved to sew and crochet, using her sewing talent to make numerous bridesmaids dresses. She received a special letter from First Lady Barbara Bush for sewing a handmade goose which was put on display in the White House. Her lush flowers and plants showed how much of a green thumb and special touch she had.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Harold Hughes; her son, Carl Edward Freeman; and her grandson, Danny Newton.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Brenda Sue Newton, Nancy (Danny) Brown, Debbie (Ronnie) Sorah, Sharon (Earl) Curry and Sandy (David) Larry; her five grandchildren, Anthony (Carrie) Newton, Cindy (Ronnie) Mills, Michelle (Daniel) Mertens, Kevin Brown and Brandon (Casey) Curry; her nine great grandchildren and her 16 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Grace Christian Church, on Athens Road, Princeton, WV, with Pastor Larry White and Doug Sluss officiating. Interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kevin Brown, Brandon Curry, Daniel Mertens, DJ (Samantha) Mills, Ronnie Mills, Anthony (Jorja) Newton II, and Dwayne (Kailee) Newton. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff of the Glenwood Nursing Home for their kindness, compassionate care and love shown to Marie during her stay.
Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com . The Hughes family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
